Carnatic music — the classical tradition of South India — provides the underlying grammar of much Tamil film music. Even modern compositions in completely different styles often borrow from its 72-melakarta raga system.

What is a raga?
A raga is a melodic framework — a set of notes with rules about how they should ascend (arohana) and descend (avarohana), which notes to emphasise, and which characteristic phrases (sancharas) to use. Each raga is associated with particular emotions and times of day. There are over 700 named ragas in active use.

The "Trinity" of Carnatic music
Tyagaraja (1767–1847), Muthuswami Dikshitar (1775–1835), and Syama Sastri (1762–1827) — known collectively as the Carnatic Trinity — composed thousands of kritis that remain the bedrock of the tradition. All three lived in or near Tiruvarur in Tamil Nadu. Their compositions are sung daily in concerts and temples worldwide.
Cinema and Carnatic — a partnership
Tamil cinema discovered Carnatic music early. Composer S. Rajeswara Rao set classical kritis to film in the 1940s. Music director M.S. Viswanathan worked entire raga structures into popular hits. K.V. Mahadevan composed for over 600 films — many built on raga foundations. Ilaiyaraaja, perhaps more than anyone, brought ragas into mainstream pop melody — songs like "Janani Janani" (raga Hamsadhwani) and "Sundari Kannal" (raga Madhyamavati) are textbook examples.
Strict adherence to raga rules. Sung in concerts, requires extensive training, focused on devotional themes.
Raga used as flavor — composer freely modifies. Set to lyrics about love, dance, social themes. Made for popular consumption.

A.R. Rahman and the digital era
A.R. Rahman, who began composing for Tamil films in 1992, expanded the Carnatic-cinema partnership. His scores for "Bombay", "Iruvar", and "Lagaan" weave traditional ragas into electronic soundscapes. Songs like "Vellai Pookkal" use raga Hamsadhwani over modern arrangements.
