1. Parasakthi (1952)

Directed by Krishnan-Panju, written by future Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, "Parasakthi" launched the career of Sivaji Ganesan and brought Dravidian movement themes into mainstream cinema. Its courtroom scene — where the protagonist denounces social hypocrisy — is among the most quoted speeches in Tamil cinema.

2. Nayagan (1987)

Mani Ratnam's gangster epic, with Kamal Haasan playing a Tamil immigrant who becomes a Bombay don. Inspired by "The Godfather", but built around uniquely Tamil themes of community, displacement, and moral ambiguity. Time magazine listed it among the 100 best films of all time.

3. Roja (1992)

Mani Ratnam again — this time pairing with first-time composer A.R. Rahman, whose score made him an overnight national figure. The story of a wife searching for her kidnapped husband in Kashmir was both a love story and a meditation on national identity. The Hindi-dubbed version made it a pan-Indian phenomenon.

4. Anbe Sivam (2003)

Sundar C. directed this road-movie buddy drama with Kamal Haasan and Madhavan. A story about ideology, friendship and the meaning of love (the title means "Love is God"). It was a commercial disappointment on release but is now widely considered one of the finest Tamil films of the 2000s.

5. Visaranai (2015)

Vetri Maaran's harrowing depiction of police custodial torture, based on M. Chandrakumar's autobiographical novel. It was India's official entry to the Academy Awards in 2016 and won three National Film Awards. It opened space for unvarnished, socially direct cinema in mainstream Tamil filmmaking.

Most of these are now available on streaming platforms — Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Sun NXT, and Aha Tamil have rotating Tamil cinema catalogues. The older titles ("Parasakthi", "Nayagan") have been digitally restored and look better than ever.
