Tamil Nadu is best known for its temples, beaches, and cinema — but the state also has some of South India's most beautiful hill stations. Most are in the Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats, with altitudes ranging from 900m to over 2,600m.

1. Udhagamandalam (Ooty) — 2,240m

The "Queen of Hill Stations" in the Nilgiris. UNESCO-listed Mountain Railway, Botanical Gardens, Ooty Lake, Doddabetta peak. Best for: families, first-time hill visitors, photography. Crowded April-June. Nearest major town: Coimbatore (88 km).

2. Kodaikanal — 2,133m

"Princess of Hill Stations" in the Palani Hills. Star-shaped lake, Coaker's Walk, Pillar Rocks, the Kurinji bloom every 12 years (next 2030). Best for: couples, walking trails, viewpoints. Cleaner than Ooty in peak season. Nearest town: Madurai (115 km).

3. Yercaud — 1,515m

"Poor Man's Ooty" in the Shevaroy Hills. Coffee plantations since 1820s, Pagoda Point, silk-cotton tree bloom in February. Best for: weekend trips from Bangalore/Chennai, budget travel, quiet weekends. Less commercial than Ooty/Kodaikanal. Nearest town: Salem (32 km).

4. Coonoor — 1,850m

In the Nilgiris, often used as a less-crowded base instead of Ooty. Tea estates, Sim's Park, Lamb's Rock, Dolphin's Nose. Excellent food scene with several boutique restaurants and tea estate stays. Best for: peaceful weekends, food, photography. 17 km from Ooty.

5. Kotagiri — 1,800m

The oldest of the Nilgiri hill stations, less developed than Ooty/Coonoor. Catherine Falls, Elk Falls, viewpoints. Best for: quiet hikes, escape from crowds, observing tribal Toda culture. 28 km from Ooty.

6. Valparai — 1,193m

In Coimbatore district, surrounded by tea, coffee and cardamom plantations. Famous for wildlife — wild elephants, Nilgiri tahrs, lion-tailed macaques. The 40-hairpin-bend road from Pollachi is itself an experience. Best for: wildlife, plantation walks, off-beat travel. 100 km from Coimbatore.

7. Topslip — 800m

Inside the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, near Pollachi. Forests, jungle safaris, treks (with permits). Less a hill town and more a forest experience. Best for: wildlife enthusiasts, those seeking unspoiled nature. Booking through Tamil Nadu Forest Department.

8. Megamalai — 1,500m

In Theni district. The "High Wavy Mountains". Cardamom estates, viewpoints, the Vellimalai forest. Best for: serious off-beat travellers — minimal infrastructure, raw beauty. Nearest town: Theni.

Practical tips

Tamil Nadu's hills are accessible from any major city, mostly within 5-7 hours by road. With careful timing (avoiding the worst peak weeks), you can experience these places at their best. And many are now connected by mountain railways — a journey that's as memorable as the destination.
