காரைக்குடி — செட்டிநாடு பிராந்தியத்தின் மிகப்பெரிய நகரம் — நாட்டுக்கோட்டை செட்டியார் வணிகர்களால் கட்டப்பட்ட 75 கிராமங்களின் கலாச்சார பகுதி. செட்டியார்கள் 19-20 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டுகளில் பர்மா, மலாயா, இலங்கை வங்கி மற்றும் வர்த்தகத்தில் செல்வம் சேர்த்து, பர்மா தேக்கு, இத்தாலிய பளிங்கு, பெல்ஜிய கண்ணாடி, பழமையான டைல்களுடன் பெரிய மாளிகைகளை கட்டினர். இன்று 11,000+ செட்டிநாடு மாளிகைகள் நிற்கின்றன. செட்டிநாடு கோழி, ஆட்டு பிரியாணி, காரமான பணியாரம் — அரிய மராத்தி மொக்கு, அனாசிப்பூ போன்ற காய்ந்த மசாலா பயன்படுத்தும் உணவுக்கு புகழ் பெற்றது.

Karaikudi is the largest town in the Chettinad region — a culturally distinct area of 75 villages built by the Nattukottai Chettiar merchant community. The Chettiars made fortunes through banking and trade across Burma, Malaya, and Ceylon in the 19th-20th centuries, and built grand mansions with Burma teak, Italian marble, Belgian glass, and antique tiles. Today over 11,000 Chettinad mansions still stand. The region is equally famous for its bold cuisine — Chettinad chicken, mutton biryani, and the spicy paniyaram — using sun-dried spices like the rare Marathi Mokku and Anasipoo.
