In Hindu tradition, the 12 Jyotirlingas are the most sacred shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to the Shiva Purana, Shiva manifested as a column of light (jyoti) at these locations — hence "jyotir-lingam", the lingam of light. A pilgrimage covering all twelve is one of the most demanding spiritual journeys in Hinduism.

1. Somnath, Gujarat

On the western coast of Gujarat. Considered the first jyotirlinga; the Somnath temple has been destroyed and rebuilt several times across history — most recently in 1951 after India's independence. The current structure is in Chalukya architectural style.

2. Mallikarjuna, Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh

Explore Ligiotec

On the Nallamala Hills above the Krishna river. Unique in being both a jyotirlinga and one of the 18 Shakti Peethas (sacred sites of the Goddess). Devotees can touch the lingam directly — rare among major temples.

3. Mahakaleshwar, Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh

Famous for the Bhasma Aarti — a daily early-morning ritual where the lingam is anointed with sacred ash. The only south-facing jyotirlinga, considered uniquely powerful.

4. Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh

On an island in the Narmada river shaped like the Sanskrit symbol Om (ॐ). The shrine sits on Mandhata island; the only jyotirlinga where Shiva is worshipped along with Parvati.

5. Kedarnath, Uttarakhand

In the Garhwal Himalayas at 3,583m altitude — accessible only April to November (closed in winter due to snow). One of the four sites of the Char Dham Yatra. The temple survived the 2013 Kedarnath floods due to a single boulder that diverted floodwaters around it.

6. Bhimashankar, Maharashtra

In the Sahyadri hills near Pune. Source of the Bhima river. Surrounded by a wildlife sanctuary — home to the rare Indian giant squirrel.

7. Kashi Vishwanath, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

On the banks of the Ganges in Varanasi (Kashi) — the holiest city of Hinduism. The temple has been rebuilt multiple times; the current structure dates from 1780. Connected to Manikarnika and Dashashwamedh ghats. Bathing in the Ganges and visiting the lingam is considered a path to moksha.

8. Trimbakeshwar, Maharashtra

Source of the Godavari river, near Nashik. Unique in having three lingam faces representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

9. Vaidyanath, Deoghar, Jharkhand

Also called Baba Baidyanath. Visited by lakhs of devotees during the Shravan month — many walk over 100 km from Sultanganj carrying Ganges water as offering ("kanwar yatra").

10. Nageshwar, Gujarat

Near Dwarka. Notable for a 25-metre tall sitting Shiva statue at the entrance. Believed to protect devotees from poison.

11. Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu

The southernmost jyotirlinga, on the island of Rameshwaram in the Bay of Bengal. The Ramanathaswamy Temple has the longest temple corridor in the world (197m) and 1,212 ornately carved pillars. Also part of the Char Dham Yatra. Devotees bathe in 22 wells (theerthams) within the temple complex before darshan.

ராமேஸ்வரம் — Tamil Nadu's contribution

12. Grishneshwar, near Ellora, Maharashtra

Near the famous Ellora Caves. The smallest jyotirlinga in size. The temple structure dates to the 16th century, built by Maloji Bhosale (grandfather of Chhatrapati Shivaji).

Doing the pilgrimage

Few pilgrims complete all 12 in one trip — they are spread from the Himalayas to the southern coast. Most cover them in stages over years. Some tour packages offer the full circuit in 25-30 days, but it is exhausting. Going slowly, with devotion to each site, is more meaningful than speed.

🪔

On Maha Shivratri night, all 12 Jyotirlingas remain open for special darshan. Many devotees fast and stay awake the entire night chanting "Om Namah Shivaya".
