Tamil Nadu's famous waterfalls — Hogenakkal in Dharmapuri, Courtallam in Tenkasi — get all the attention. But the state has dozens of lesser-known cascades, often more peaceful, sometimes accessible only after a short trek. Here are ten worth visiting.

A 1,000-step descent (and ascent!) leads to a 300-foot waterfall in the Kolli Hills. The trek takes about 90 minutes each way. Best after the northeast monsoon (October-January). Carry water, sturdy shoes. Limited mobile signal — inform someone before going.

2. Thalaiyar Falls (Rat Tail Falls), Kodaikanal — 297m

Tamil Nadu's tallest waterfall, visible from the Dum Dum Rock viewpoint near Kodaikanal. The 297m drop makes it one of the tallest in India. Cannot be approached from below — view from the top is the only way.

3. Suruli Falls, Theni district

A two-tier 50m waterfall in the Western Ghats, accessible from Theni. Mentioned by the Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar in Tirukkural. Decent infrastructure — bathing area at the lower tier, snack stalls, parking.

4. Kiliyur Falls, Yercaud — Salem district

A 91m waterfall about 3km from Yercaud lake, reached by a 1.5km trek through coffee plantations. Best in monsoon (June-November). The route passes through native Shola forest — birdwatchers will spot endemic species.

5. Catherine Falls, Kotagiri — The Nilgiris

A two-tiered 76m waterfall, 8km from Kotagiri. The viewpoint is reached by a short walk through tea estates. Best after monsoon (October-January) when the flow is strong but the path is dry.

6. Monkey Falls, Pollachi — Coimbatore district

Located along the road from Pollachi to Valparai, named for the Bonnet macaques that congregate here. Bathing pool at the base — popular weekend destination. 30 km from Pollachi.

7. Aruvi Aruvi (Pambar Falls), Kodaikanal

A small but picturesque waterfall close to Kodaikanal — 8km from the town. The Pambar river drops about 35m over rocks. Less crowded than Silver Cascade. Easy access by road.

8. Kumbakarai Falls, Theni district

A series of small cascades on the Pannayar river. Excellent for picnics and bathing — multiple shallow pools. About 5km from Periyakulam. Carries water year-round.

9. Five Falls (Aindharuvi), Courtallam — Tenkasi

Yes, Courtallam — but this specific spot, where five separate streams cascade down at the same place, is less crowded than the famous Main Falls. Drive 4km from Main Falls. Five Falls is reputed to have therapeutic medicinal properties from the herbs the water passes over.

10. Pykara Falls, near Ooty — The Nilgiris

On the Pykara river, formed at two points — a higher upper falls and a lower waterfall and dam. About 19km from Ooty. The Pykara Lake nearby offers boating. Mature setting — well-developed but still beautiful.

Practical packing list

கொண்டு செல்ல வேண்டியவை

  • நீர் (carry your own — most falls do not have shops)
  • Trekking shoes — slippery rocks
  • Light raincoat — even non-monsoon, mist soaks
  • Snacks for trail
  • First aid kit + insect repellent
  • Plastic bag for trash — TN forest department-ஆல் strict eco-rules
  • Government-issued ID — entry permit checkpoints

Most of these waterfalls require a short detour from the main tourist circuit. Treat them with respect — pack out everything you bring in, don't play loud music, and stay on marked paths. The reward is having one of nature's most beautiful sights largely to yourself.
